8 Feel-Good Books to Read During Quarantine

I don’t know what I would do without books in my life. Especially in times of stress. Reading is my escape, my instant stay-cation, the ultimate self-care. We could all use some of that right now! Here’s a list of books that made me feel all the nice things.

1. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

This book is in my top 5 favorite books of all time. Most people think that therapists, of all people, have their entire life together. Lori’s memoir serves as the antidote to that thought. Her raw, hilarious and incredibly honest stories will have you screaming, “I thought that was just me!”. You will see yourself and the people around you in a completely different light after reading this book. It was recently announced that Eva Longoria has bought the rights to make this into a TV show, and I couldn’t be more excited!

2. A Tree Grows In Brooklyn

A classic for a reason, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is also one of my top favorite books of all time. Betty Smith masterfully paints the day-to-day life of a young girl in Brooklyn circa 1912. This is a longer read than most books, but it is 100% worth it. Reading about life back in the 1900s from the point of view of the irresistible lead, Francie, really puts life into perspective – especially right now.

3. What Alice Forgot 

Written by the same author as Big Little Lies, this book really makes you think twice about how the choices we make today can impact our future. I don’t want to give too much away, but just know you’ll be rooting for Alice the entire way through. Jennifer Aniston is attached to play Alice in the movie version.

4. The Opposite of Loneliness

This book is a compilation of essays that will bring out all of your emotions. ALL of them. This is a perfect book for when you only have a little bit of time to read since you can read one essay at a time.

5. Eleanor Oliphant

Eleanor is a master at self-isolation. Timely, huh? This is one of my favorite Reese Witherspoon / Hello Sunshine book club picks that I’ve read. Eleanor is hilarious, and watching her come out of her shell had me laughing and crying at the same time.

7. All Along You Were Blooming

I am almost finished readding this book and I might cry (again) when I do. This book of poems read my most intimate mail! I felt known and understood in ways only my therapist and absolute best friends would. Morgan speaks deep truths in the most stunningly worded pieces of art. I first started reading this book on my kindle but I highly suggest ordering a physical copy of the book, her illustrations add a whole new and colorful dimension to the poems. Morgan, can we be friends?

7. Present Over Perfect

The next two books are also compilations of essays and are both by the same author. Shauna’s essays and short stories feel like you’re having coffee with your best friend who understands you better than anyone. In this book, she explores the power of being in the moment versus striving for more. My inner recovering perfectionist really needs to read this one every few years.

8. Cold Tangerines

Read one or two of these short stories per day, and tell me your world doesn’t seem sweeter! Shauna does a really good job at celebrating even the littlest of moments in this book.
