A few years ago I finally found a water-tracker app that works! Waterlogged has been my saving grace. Super user-friendly, Waterlogged helps helps you keep track of how much water you drink every day and even has the ability to send you reminder notifications throughout the day.
But first:
How much water should I drink daily?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to how much water to drink. You’ve probably heard the 8×8 “rule”: 8, 8oz glasses of water per day for a grand total of 64oz/day.
However, according to WebMD, another way to calculate your daily hydtration needs is to drink half of your current weight in ounces. So if you weigh 140lbs, you should aim to drink 70oz.
Whichever method of calculation you choose, keep in mind that you should increase your intake if you are very active and also during hot climate months.
With that being said, once you’ve calculated how much water you should drink in a day, you can start using Waterlogged! Here’s a quick tutorial.
Quick Waterlogged App how-to:
1. Set your goal
Tap on the bottom right corner of your screen where it says “Goal” to adjust your intended water intake. I found that setting this to the minimum helped me stay encouraged since it was an easier reach than my ultimate goal of 80oz.
2. Input your water containers
Waterlogged lets you add your water bottles & glasses including a picture (optional) their capacity. If you have one that you use more than the others, tap on the star icon to make it your go-to “favorite”.
3. Set reminder preferences
By clicking on the clock in the upper right hand corner of the screen, you can choose the specifics of if and how and how often you want to be reminded to drink water.
I prefer to set mine to only remind me during the workday so that I can get my water in before dinner time and not have to wake up to pee at night. I swear my bladder is the size of a hummingbird.
4. Log your water intake
It is SUPER easy to log how much water you are drinking throughout your day. Tap on the plus sign icon in the middle of the screen and a screen will appear asking you: what container you are drinking from, how much of the container you’ve drank and what kind of liquid is in it.
5. Feel proud!
Once you’ve drank (and logged) your goal amount, the app sends you a congratulatory notification! I have not yet gotten tired of seeing this…
A few more tips I’ve found helpful in staying hydrated:
Bottle size: Bigger water bottles are your friends! I have a few small water bottles but I was too lazy to keep refilling them.
Flavor: It is important to make sure you like the taste of your water. Some plastic water bottles leave a less than desirable plastic aftertaste, that’s not going to help you drink more water!
You might even want to play around with flavoring your water naturally with a peppermint tea bag, or a lemon slice. My favorite way to flavor my water is by making some refreshing sun tea!
Temperature: I also found that I prefer my water on the cooler side.
For those reasons, I prefer glass and stainless steel water bottles.
These are my two favorite water bottles:
17oz or 25oz Stainless Steel S’well
I prefer this one for when I am out and about. It’s insulation keeps my water ice cold even on 100 degree summer days in my car!
I hope this helps you drink your water friends!
